Leading Advanced Scrambles

Leading Grade 2 and 3 scrambles borrows heavily from rock climbing techniques and also employs it's own skillset. This course covers roped mountaineering without having to become a climber.

Price: £220 - 340 - 550 per person
Ratio: 1:2
Length: 2, 3 or 5 days

Who is this for?

You've seconded Grade 2 or 3's, know how to belay and want to lead the terrain. Scrambling routes can be hundreds of metres long, making moving efficiently and choosing the right techniques an important factor in completing a route in a timely manner. This creates a vast descion making space of factors where there is often not 'one right way'. Without this pressure, we'll get you leading Grade 2 or 3's and workshop the decision making processes in context.

This course is ideal for those wanting to explore mountaineering routes and prepare for Alpine activities.

By the end of the course you will have developed the technical skills required to move lead through this terrain. And personalised feedback on how to develop your skills to progress more profficiency at leading Grade 3's, mountain routes and insight into larger objectives like the Cuillin, Tower Ridge and Alpinism routes.

What does the course cover?

Moving through challenging terrain usually home to climbers you will learn:

  • Belay buillding, direct and indirect

  • Efficient ropework

  • Placing climbing protection

  • To pitch or not to pitch, decision making in moving together

  • Tactics in moving together

  • Retreating and abseiling

  • Lots of scrambling routes at Grade 2 and 3

Equipment

We have ample personal equipment like harnesses, helmets, climbing rack and ropes available. You are welcome to use your own equipment, and complete kitlist will be sent out ahead of time.

Where will we go?

We'll tackle some of Snowdonia's most classic mountaineering routes,  some test pieces on on the East Face of Tryfan and possibly a climbing crag to practice some technical elements.

Further Questions

Email me any questions you might have that I haven't thought of.

  • Do I need climbing shoes? All routes can be done in boots or approach shoes, climbing shoes are not required.

  • Will there be any climbing? We may climb one or two pitches of Mod/Diff, which I will safeguard.

  • What if it's raining? Thought and provision is made for inclement weather.

  • What if I already lead Diff or above? Scrambling isn't climbing, and as you may have experienced, pitching a whole route is often painfully slow progress.
